With her endless limbs, swan-like neck and porcelain skin, set off in the sort of outfits her costume designer on TV hit The Night Manager described as ‘being one button or a zip away from being completely naked’, 6ft 2in Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki was made for slinking down the red carpet.

And after her performance opposite Tom Hiddleston in the John le Carré spy thriller she may be doing a lot more of it. Tom may be the talk of the town after The Night Manager, with all bets off when it comes to him being cast as the next Bond, but Elizabeth is also finding herself in huge demand after her star turn as Jed, the beautiful but troubled mistress of Hugh Laurie’s arms dealer Richard Roper – and she’s dreading having to step onto the red carpet again.

‘I’m terrified of them,’ she tells me. ‘Red carpets are awful. They’re like a kind of purgatory – you stand there and there are cameras flashing everywhere. One of my first red carpets was in Cannes for The Great Gatsby and I’d never seen anything like it. It was like a red carpet on crack – the bulbs were everywhere. They were obviously there for Leo DiCaprio – I don’t think anyone knew I was even in the film – but I was standing next to him and they were so frightening I nearly died!’

Her next TV role took her back to the southern hemisphere, to ‘Tassie’ as she affectionately refers to Tasmania, to shoot eerie eight-part crime drama The Kettering Incident, which has been dubbed Australia’s Twin Peaks.
